    • William Sawyer, who came from England to Salem, Mass., about 1640, removed to Newbury, where a son WILLIAM was born in 1655. In an old burying-ground in Newburyport, there was a tier of tall, oldfashioned slate gravestones marking the earthly resting place of a Sawyer family, and from dates inscribed there they show that some were born in the mother country.
