HISTORY OF THE BARTON FAMILY
by Alvin Barton
February 20, 1846
Being between 52 and 53 years and not knowing whether I shall live many days
or few and having no patrimony to leave to my children, perhaps the following
sketch may be interesting to some of my posterity.
I was born in the town of Whitingham, Windham Co. Vt. Sept. 15, 1793, fourth
son of Jonathan Barton. My eldest brother's name was Ozias - my oldest sister's
name was Hepzibah. My second brother was Joel - my 3rd Lorenzo who died when
I was about 17 months old. After this, I had another brother Lorenzo born in
the same town with myself.
We lived in Whitingham 'till I was between 2 and 3 years old, when we moved to
Hoosack, N. Y. and lived there 2 years, then to Bennington, Vt. where we lived
one year.
We then moved to Bolton, Warren Co., N. Y. where I had a sister born named Achsah.
In this town we lived 'till all the children became men and women. In this town
my father and mother died.
My oldest brother Ozias emigrated to Loraine, N. Y. and married Sally Lamson
and had the following children:
Jonanthan L. - Lucinda F. - Sidney W. - Betsey L. - Achsah L.
Sally Ann - George W. - Harry C and Hubert J.
Jonathan L., Betsey L. and George W. died in their youth. Sidney W. married Fanny
Bliss and lives in Loraine. Sally Ann married a Hale and lives in Adam, N. Y.
My oldest sister Hepzibah married a widower with 2 children by the name of Sylvester
Satterlee of Bolton who after having lived in Warrensburg, Hadley and Easton,
is now living in Nunda, Allegheny Co., N. Y. They (Hepsy) have had the following
children:
Hepzibah, Penelope, Jonathan B., Sylvester O., Emily, Melinda M.,
Salman, Hannah, Levi C. and Harriet
Harriet died in her childhood. Hepzibah married Jack Petty and has been a widow
for several years - lives in Nunda. Penelope married Holden E. Prosser who is
a Baptist Minister to me unknown. Jonathan B. and Sylvester are married. Emily
and Melinda M. married brothers by the name of Perins. Salmon married a widow
Skinner and lives in Nunda - Jonathan B. in the western part of the state, Sylvester
O. in Iowa and Emily and Melinda in Pennsylvania.
My second brother Joel married Thankful Waters and lived in Bolton 'till he died.
He had ll children, viz: Uri S., Samantha M., Calvin A., Daniel D., Emily A.,
Hannah H., Achsah J., Phebe A., Warren J., Lois A., and Mary F. Uri S. married
Harriet Wright and lives in Iowa. Samantha M. married Nathaniel Ingram, Jr. of
this town. Emily H. married John Smith of Caldwell and Hannah A. married Sanford
Duel of this town.
I was married to Betsey Cole of Chester and have lived since in Bolton, Warrensburg
and this town, Horicon, Warren Co., N. Y.
I have been the father of nine children, viz: - Cyrus X., Judson N., Edward W.,
David D., Martha Z., Hannah A. and Alvin J., Betsey L., and Cynthia D. - Edward
W. and David died in infancy.
Cyrus X is married to Clara Williams and all the survivors live in town.
My youngest brother Lorenzo married Pruda Thomas who died about 6 months afterward.
After this he married Clarissa Parks and had the following children:
Pruda T., Caroline A., Henry F., Emily J., Reuben S., Melissa C.,
Malvina D., Addie A., Lorenzo, Jr.
Reuben S. died in infancy and Malvina D. in her youth. Lorenzo migrated from
Bolton to this town (Horicon) and has buried his second wife. His oldest daughter
married Samuel C. Goodman of Bolton and is now a widow. Caroline A. married Benonie
West of Minerva, N. Y. Melissa C. married Amos Ingram of this town.
My father was born in Spenser, Worcester Co., Mass. was the son of Timothy
Barton. He
had 4 brothers and 2 sisters and 1 half brother and 2 half sisters. His brothers
were - Timothy, Benjamin, Alpheus, and Josiah, his half brother Joshua, his sistersMolly
and Anna and his half sisters Hepzibah and Sally. Anna died in childhood -Molly
married a Livermore and had a number of children: John, James, - Timothymarried
Phebe Stone and his children are Simon, Perley, Anna, Clarissa, Olive,Phebe,
Ira, Daniel and Leonard. Phebe, Olive and Leonard are dead; He, Timothy married
a second wife, the widow Bailey. Benjamin Barton married Sarah Stone - had children
Silas, Stephen, James and Susan. Stephen and Susan are dead. He married a second
wife, Betsey Sabin by whom he had two children, Sally and Rachel. Alpheus Barton
married Almida Barton, has I believe, 5 children: John, Mehetable, Jonathan,
etc. After his wife's death he married a second whose given name was Polly and
I think, had eight more children - Enos, Ozias, Richard and I don't remember
all their names. Josiah Barton's wife's given name was Eleanor - who she was,
I can't say - He had an only daughter Catherine who married and then died. In
his old age he married again and was in a fair way to raise a second family.
Joshua Barton was married and had a large family and this is all I know about
him. Sally Barton married a Prentice. Afterwards I heard she lived at Saratoga
Springs with a man by the name of Osborne.
Grandfather Barton's wife was Hepzibah Stow who had a brother Jonathan and Josiah
and how many other relatives, I know not. Some of my progenitors, either by Grandfather
or Grandmother were named Brown and More. Grandfather's grandfather or great
grandfather emigrated from Wales. There were four brothers of them; one settled
in New York, one in Rhode Island, one in Mass. and the fourth went back. They
were shipwrecked coming over. I sprang from the Mass. Bartons. I know nothing
of these ancient Bartons except one was Penuel Barton. My great grandfather's
name was Joshua Barton. His sons were Joshua, Reuben, and Nathan, besides Grandfather.
He had a daughter Anna who married a Robinson, another who married a Rich and
how many others I have no means of ascertaining. Grandfather had a second wife,
Amy Allen and married one Persis Livermore. My Mother was Hannah Dix, daughter
of Benjamin Dix of Scotch descent and Mehitable Sanderson of Danish origin. I
know nothing of Grandfather Dix progenitors -only he had relatives and a sister
who brought him up. Grandmother Dix had a brother, Benjamin Sanderson and others,
a sister who married a Kingsbury. Her name was Hannah. Another sister married
a Coolidge and I believe one that married a Bartlett - and how many others I
cannot tell. Grandfather Dix had a second wife, his first wife's brother's widow.
By his first wife he had fourteen children, four of whom died in infancy and
one by name of Benjamin in youth. Four sons and five daughters lived to be married.
Mehitable Dix married a widower by name of Hinsdale. Hermon had two children
in his lifetime and one after his death. His children's names were Lillah, Joel
and Mehitable. Lillah married Joseph Myers. After her husband's death Aunt Mehitable
married Reuben Stearns. Dave Dix married Betsey Bartholomew had a great family
of children, all of whom died in infancy except the two youngest, Betsey and
Comfort. Betsey married but Comfort did not. Elijah Dix married Margaret Clark
and had a large family.
Benjamin Colburn had three children, viz: Benjamin, Eunice and Achsah. Eunice
and Achsah died in infancy. When Aunt was a widow she afterwards married David
Allen and had two more children, Eunice and Joel. Eunice married a Hall. They
live in Pennsylvania.
Sarah Dix married Nathaniel Streeter - had the following children: Miriam, Jonathan,
Mehitable, Molly, Hannah, Nathaniel and two Elijahs. The first Elijah died in
childhood. Miriam married a Salisbury, Mehitable a Chase, Molly a Thomas and
Hannah a Parks, Jonathan a Brown and Nathaniel a Monroe and Lois Dix married
James McKinstry and had a great family of children among whom I remember: James,
Alexander, Anna, Mary, Nancy, William, David and Moses.
Joseph Dix married Sally Fisher - their children were Horatio, Joseph, Emma and
Augusta and a girl whose name I do not recollect, who married an Eaton. Jonathan
Dix married Amy Mars had a great family: Mavis, Lydia, Jonathan, Silas, Solomon,
Amy and a few other names forgotten by me.
Grandfather Dix's natural place was, I believe, Dedham, Mass. Mother was brought
up in Sturbridge, Worcester Co., Mass. where grandfather died in a good old age.
Mother was the youngest of her family and Father was the eldest of his family.
Mother was burn in Leicester, Mass.
