He, with his wife, settled in the year 1769, on the Hill farm, then in the town of New Hartford. The site of his first house was near the dwelling now occupied by Daniel Humphrey, near the confines of Barkhamsted. His first house was destroyed by fire in 1785, but was rebuilt soon and he remained there until 1792, when he removed to the south-east part of Barkhamsted, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a man of great frame, large bone, and of great strength for labor, when in the prime of life particularly at mowing. It may be said of the whole of those ten Messenger brothers, that they were uncommonly great, strong men. Pvt.
